The ultimate in Australian comfort food, rissoles are a must-have! It’sIt’s one of our favorite BBQ recipes and is excellent for gatherings and parties. You can also serve it in hamburger buns or white bread.

This recipe is highly adaptable. You can use beef, turkey, chicken, or pork mince. If you like, add some finely grated vegetables. You can make them larger to use as a main dish or in burgers or smaller for mini-rissoles.

You can easily make a large batch of the recipe and then freeze it for later.

Two Secrets for Super Juicy Rissoles

Rosa, the mother of a friend, taught us this. After years and years, her rissoles have become very popular among friends and family. We begged her for her secret recipe to make the juiciest of rissoles. The formula includes all of her tricks and tips, but the reasons her rissoles stand out are:

Season the rissoles using French onion soup mix. This is a quick, easy, and delicious way to add flavor.

Use soaked bread slices in place of breadcrumbs. They are so juicy with this method! This recipe is perfect for rissoles that are not dried out.

What is a Rissole?

Rissoles, round thick patties, are usually made from beef mince but can be made using chicken, turkey, or pork mince.

The Australian rissole is very different from other rissoles around the world. Names can be applied to various dishes, including pastry-coated fruits and minced meat wrapped in breadcrumbs.

The Australian BBQ is only complete with rissoles. They are a great alternative to steak, chops, or sausages.

What you’ll need

Minced meat – Avoid lean mince, and choose a mince with some fat. This is the secret to juicy rissoles. If you don’tdon’t like beef, try chicken, turkey, or pork mince. Try making lighter patties by using 2/3 beef and 1/3 pork.

White bread is perfect. This is another way to use leftover or stale bread slices. The rissoles will stay juicier and keep their shape if you soak the bread. Squeeze any excess liquid from the bread before adding it to the mince.

Egg This is used to bind together the ingredients in the rissole.

French Onion Soup mix- The blends of spices in French Onion soup mix give the patties the perfect balance and are a quick, easy, and convenient way to season them. This recipe can be made with the entire packet. If you cannot source it, substitute it with a suitable amount of garlic salt, celery salt, Italian herbs, spice mix, or Italian herbs and spices.

How To Add Hidden Vegetables to Homemade Rissoles

Adding vegetables is an excellent way to boost the nutritional value of your rissoles. Popular options include grated carrot, finely diced onion, and grated (squeezed) zucchini. Also, you could try broccoli or cauliflower (blitzed/pureed in a blender). Add your favorites or all of them!

Whatever vegetables you choose, chop, grate, or blend them as finely as possible, and then squeeze any liquid out to prevent your rissoles from becoming a soggy mess.

How to Make Rissole Patties

Soak pieces of white bread with water in a large bowl to make them softer. Squeeze out as much liquid from the mixture as you can.

Spread French Onion Soup Mix, and add Egg and Beef mince to the soaked bread. Use your hands to combine until all ingredients are combined. Optional Add grated onion and carrot.

You can make them any size. You can make them as small or large as you like. The ideal size for rissoles is 100 g/3.5 oz.

Store uncooked patties between layers of baking papers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week or in the freezer for up to a year.

Patties- Hand mixes the ingredients for a smooth texture. It will also ensure that the bread and seasonings are evenly distributed throughout the mince.

Cooking- Rissoles taste incredible when cooked on a barbecue or over charcoal. However, they are also fine cooked in a pan on the stove. Try steaming them as you cook them to make them more juicy. This is similar to Japanese Hamburger Steaks.

Variations

Add Flavour_ Add Worcestershire sauce before forming the mixture into patties.

Make them spicy- Add some homemade gochujang Sauce!

Additional Nutrition- Add a small can of mashed beans to the mix.

Add Coating- Roll in flour or breadcrumbs. (Regular or Japanese Panko breadcrumbs are best for added crunch.) Wrap them in pastry to make a rissole package more European.
